Active Leadership, Future-Readiness, and Getting a PhD in Yourself

Change is in the air! That’s how it always feels to me at this time of year, as we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall once again.

And what a summer it was! I got to do some travelling, fulfill a childhood dream of driving a bulldozer, and recharge for the year ahead. (No matter how old I get, September still feels like the start of a new year.)

The last big summer sunset.

With a new year ahead of us, as we get back into our routines, it’s the perfect time to take the first step in becoming future-ready leaders. So how do we do that? Well, what’s worked for me, and what the research shows, is to get a PhD in yourself.

Getting a PhD in yourself means learning about yourself and how others see you. It means knowing your purpose, what motivates you, and how to get out of your own way.

By the end of the process, you’ll know:

  • What ticks you off?
  • How do you anticipate change?
  • How do you like to create the future?
  • What is your own BS?

Getting a PhD in yourself is the starting point for any leader to become future-ready. That’s why there is a whole chapter about it in my book, Spark Action. And as a special start-of-fall treat, you can download a copy of that chapter below – for free!

Active Leadership to Build Future Ready Organisations

Disruptive empathy, communities of understanding and PhDs in self-awareness are just a few of the concepts I explored with Lisa LLoyd in my recent appearance on the Beyond the Water Cooler podcast.

We also discussed a number of statements, including:

  • Everyone wants to know what the future of work is.
  • Disruption is necessary for work to evolve.
  • Taking action requires the right mindset.
  • We need to get out of our comfort zone.
  • Leadership is something that we can measure.
  • Psychological safety is not a business term.

And what we had to say about these topics may surprise you!

Thanks again to Lisa for having me on the podcast, and for a great conversation about future-readiness! Listen here.

Thank you for reading! I hope the resources above help you, your teams, and your organizations become future-ready.

Happy Fall!
